What the program covers

Portrait photography requires decisions at every stage — equipment settings, available light, how you position a subject, and what you do with the file afterward. Each module addresses one part of that chain.

Sessions run in small groups at the Cairns City location. Participants bring their own camera; feedback is given on their specific images rather than generic examples.

  • 1
    Camera basics for portraits

Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO — how each setting affects the look of a face in different light conditions.

  • 2
    Natural light in Cairns conditions

Working with tropical light — harsh midday sun, overcast skies, and the low golden-hour angles specific to this latitude.

  • 3
    Directing subjects

Posing without making people feel posed. Conversation, micro-adjustments, and timing to get genuine expressions.

  • 4
    Composition and framing

Where to place a subject within the frame, what to include and exclude, and how cropping changes a portrait's weight.

  • 5
    Studio and artificial light

Basic strobe setups, reflectors, and how to replicate natural-light looks using equipment when outdoors isn't an option.

  • 6
    Post-processing portraits

Skin tone adjustments, sharpening eyes, background control — editing choices that stay consistent with how the image was shot.

  • 7
Building a consistent body of work

What makes a portfolio feel cohesive and how to identify your own visual preferences rather than copying trends.

  • 8
    Review and critique sessions

Group critique of participant images with structured feedback on specific technical and compositional decisions.

Who teaches the program

Three photographers with different specialisations deliver the sessions. Each brings a distinct working method — participants see the same problem approached from multiple angles.

Portrait photographer and program lead

Declan Farquhar

Program Lead — Natural Light

Declan has spent over a decade photographing people in outdoor environments across northern Queensland. His sessions focus on reading available light and working without additional equipment.

"The most useful skill is seeing what's already there before adding anything."

Studio lighting specialist

Tibor Vásárhelyi

Studio and Artificial Light

Tibor's background is in commercial portraiture. He teaches the studio modules with a focus on understanding light physics rather than memorising setups — so participants can adapt when things don't go to plan.

"Knowing why a setup works means you can fix it when it doesn't."

Sorcha Ní Fhaoláin

Post-Processing and Review

Sorcha leads the editing and critique sessions. Her approach centres on what the image looked like at capture and making editing decisions that stay consistent with the original light and mood rather than correcting for its absence.

"Editing should finish the image, not rescue it."
